Heartfelt

Today at church I saw a cute home-made Father's Day card (or probably made in Primary, aka Sunday School for children) sitting on a table in the foyer. It was a simple piece of white paper folder in half to form a card, and on the front written in green crayon were the words, "HAPPY FATHER'S DAY". A lovely pink flower was drawn below the words. I picked up and opened the card to read the rest of the message. "HAPPY FATHER'S DAY.....YOU ARE TO FAT." with a sad little frowny face at the end (and an 'O' missing from the 'too'). I kid you not! That is really what the card said! I wanted to keep it, but left it there just in case the recipient came back for it. Something tells me, however, that card was left behind on purpose. That poor dad! Just the sort of heartfelt message he was hoping to hear from his kid on Father's Day.

based on a true story

Once upon a time there was a Daddy who came home for lunch. While eating his sandwich and sitting by his daughter who was laying under her activity mat toys, the daddy leaned over and said, "We named you Sara because it stands for Sweet And Really Awesome."

And they all lived happily ever after. The End.

Tiny

At church today, this little boy who was probably about two years old was sitting in front of us with his parents. He kept looking back at Sara and was saying the cutest things. I had to write down a few so I would remember them word for word.

"Look at the tiny baby!"
"I'm gonna get tiny when I'm older."
"Why is she so tiny?"

Bill Cosby was right. Kids really do say the darndest things.

Sprechen Sie Deutsch?

While riding the Trax today, I overheard a conversation between a middle-aged woman and another woman in her mid-20's. First the middle aged woman asked for directions someplace. Then the conversation continued as follows:

"I just moved here a few months ago. I'm not sure."
"Oh, where are you from?"
"I'm from New Jersey."
"Oh, New Jersey huh? So what do you speak, German?"

-- she was totally serious.

Don't they know it's the 3rd of July??

Last night Rob and I went for a stroll around the neighborhood and happened to catch the fireworks after the Real Salt Lake soccer game. We live just a few blocks West of the University of Utah, and that is currently where Real (pronounced "Re-al" not "Reel") plays until their new stadium is completed. As we were standing on the grass by the sidewalk on 300 South and about 900 East enjoying the lovely display of Patriotism, a lady walked by and loudly proclaimed, "Don't they know it's the 3rd of July??"
We then explained that they were for the soccer game, and she said, "Oh....Go soccer." Then she just kept on walking. I thought it strange that she didn't stop to enjoy them. I mean, we only see fireworks once or twice a year, and they're pretty fun to watch. I guess maybe the magic just wears off after a while for some people, but we were happy to have caught the show. Last year we hiked Ensign Peak on the evening of July 4th (a short hike in the foothills above the State Capitol), and the closest show was again at the U of U stadium, but it was very far away from up there. We could see about 5 or 6 fireworks displays from all over the valley up there on our little spot on the hill, but they were all very far away. Last night as we were watching them from just a few blocks away, we could actually feel the shock waves from the big explosions! Now that's pretty darn cool. Not only do fireworks create beautiful bursts of color and light when they explode, but you can actually feel them! We're not sure if we'll be seeing any fireworks tonight on the actual 4th of July (we're going to a demolition derby as part of Ogden's "Hot Rock'n 4th" celebration! Woo-hoo!!) so we're glad we saw some last night to get our fill.

Happy Independence Day everyone!!
